The OMMEGANG, famous Brussels procession and festival gains UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Intangible World Heritage Humanity status. This was decided yesterday during the meeting of the UNESCO committee in Bogota, Columbia.
“A wonderful recognition for Brussels, its region and the country”, wrote on the status of the Ommegang’s Facebook page. Organisers also note that:
This intangible cultural heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity. We are proud of this recognition, and we will uphold the values of UNESCO and our history.
