Discover the Christmas tree on the Grand Place in Brussels

  • Editorial Team

  • 2 minute read

The traditional Christmas tree arrived on the Grand-Place in Brussels during the early morning of 17th November. Here are a few important details about the tree, its origins and the upcoming decorations.

The tree is being decorated during 18 & 19 November with 600 champagne-colored balls and 2 km of luminous garland. All lights will be LED. The Christmas tree will come to life for the very first time on Friday, November 25 (from 6 p.m.), during the inauguration ceremony of Winter Wonders / Plaisirs d’Hiver festival. The 22nd edition of Winter Wonders will take place from 25.11.2022 to 01.01.2023 and sound & light show will also take place on the Grand-Place each day during this period.

If you’re wondering where it comes from, this year’s 18-meters high tree was offered to the City of Brussels by its owners from Raeren, in the province of Liège. Having reached maturity, its succession is already assured thanks to the planting of 10 new trees. Once the festival Plaisirs d’Hiver comes to an end, the tree will be transformed into various objects. The same sustainable practice was followed last year when the tree was reused by a Belgian craftsman to make tables and benches that were used on the Winter Wonders market, as well as to create the Bxl Tour trophy.

Can’t make it to the Grand Place this year? The Christmas tree will also be visible via the web camera which is installed on the main square. You can view the live feed via the following link.

We have also published a time-lapse of the arrival of the tree on the Grand Place, thanks to the Instagrammer @markantonys who captured this moment.
