The exhibition “Terracotta Army. And The First Emperor of China” comes to Brussels from 9th of October 2024, offering an extraordinary voyage in Ancient China of 2,200 years ago. It promises to be one of the most comprehensive exhibitions created on the Terracotta Army, the necropolis, and the life of the First Emperor of China.

After drawing crowds in Naples in 2017 and Milan in 2019, this exhibition finally arrives in Brussels, on the grounds of Tour & Taxis, to reveal one of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures. A timeless legacy that continues to captivate generations.

What to expect?

Explore one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, which uncovered over 8,000 statues of soldiers, chariots, and horses buried to protect the First Emperor in the afterlife. The Terracotta Army, unearthed in Xi’an, has provided a new perspective on the art, culture, and history of Imperial China, marking a turning point in our understanding of its past.

In an incredible staging, this exhibition brings together more than 300 reproductions of statues, chariots, weapons and objects that were discovered in the pits of the necropolis. They were produced by Chinese craftsmen from the excavation region, with a particular consideration for details in order to maintain the same beauty and originality of the original works.

Immerse yourself in a captivating reconstruction of Pit No. 1, where 170 life-sized statues are enhanced by a light and sound show. This spectacular presentation recreates the unique atmosphere of the buried army. You can also admire many other replicas, showcasing the grandeur of this archaeological discovery, from the army to the chariots and horses, in a breathtaking visual experience.

This exhibition is an extraordinary voyage in Ancient China of 2,200 years ago.

Visitors will be also able to learn about Jang Zhifa thanks to an exclusive interview where he recounts how, in 1974, he accidentally discovered the first Terracotta Army statues while digging a well. He shares his emotions and the significant moments of this discovery, which not only changed his life but also shook the world of archaeology, revealing an invaluable cultural treasure.

This exhibition offers a unique immersion into the heart of the necropolis of China’s First Emperor in a very complete and comprehensive way, intended for a broad audience and for all generations. With a space of no less than 1,800 m², the show offers a journey the history of the First Emperor, his authentic army, military conquests, empire, the creation process of the Terracotta Army soldiers, the Emperor’s tomb, history of the archaeological excavations… definitely a show not to be missed in Brussels in the coming months!
