Theatre aficionados in Brussels should mark their calendars – a new show by The Bridge Theatre is coming in November! The Bridge Theatre is Brussels’ professional English-language theatre currently operating in a nomadic setting, produces theatre which aims to connect Brussels through culture. Their forthcoming production – GROUNDED by George Brant – tackles the question of how technology is influencing our relationship with work and highlights the challenges of balancing motherhood with professional life.
GROUNDED is a gripping and poetic drama following an American fighter pilot navigating two new arenas: drone warfare and motherhood. As she is pulled between her compulsive drive to complete her professional duties at war and her impulse to care for her daughter and partner, just a commute away, the collateral impact of her actions at war suddenly feel dangerously close to home. Written in 2012, GROUNDED vividly illustrates the complexities we face on a daily basis linked to technological advances, and raises questions regarding those yet to come.
“We are proud to create a brand new production of this hidden gem specifically for the Brussels audience. Written ten years ago and most famously performed by Anne Hathaway in New York, this female-led play explores the often blurred line between work and private life. It also interrogates the morality of waging a 21st-century war from the perspective of a woman warrior who is also a mother.”
EDWARD MCMILLAN, The Artistic Director of The Bridge Theatre
GROUNDED will star Letty Thomas in the lead role of the Pilot. Letty graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London in 2017. Since then, she has had a wide experience in theatre, television and film. Letty is known for The Crown (2016), Soulmates (2020) and Bridgerton (2020), as well as the 2020 feature film, Emma. Her theatre credits include work in several London theatres, including at the Royal Court, The Old Vic, Finborough Theatre and Almeida.
The production will be directed by Emma Howlett, a talented young director based in London. Howlett will be supported by set and costume designer Ellie Wintour, lighting designer Ed Saunders, and Sound Designer Sarah Spencer.
The mission of The Bridge Theatre is to connect the people of Brussels via the experience of culture. Therefore, as with all its productions, the intention behind producing and showcasing GROUNDED is to shine a light on a specific socially-relevant topic, in this case the impact of technology on our relationship with work. In order to make the link between what happens on stage and our everyday lives, several performances also feature post-show talks exploring the play’s themes from different angles.
For this production, The Bridge Theatre has partnered with Full Circle, a multipurpose event space of which provides a clean canvas for the visual complexities that will be presented to the audience of this gripping human story.
