The public in Belgium will be among the first in Europe to have a chance to discover the immersive experience about Frida Kahlo. The extraordinary exhibition Viva Frida Kahlo is dedicated to the work and life of the world-famous Mexican artist and will take place in a brand new immersive venue in Brussels: VIAGE – Digital Art Theatre from March 18th 2022.
The show will offer an insight into the tragic life of the Mexican artist and her creations. Full of colorful, exotic symbolism, as well as a series of powerful self-portraits, the expressive artist’s creations and her life are at the heart of this immersive exhibition, presented using high-performance video projection and light and acoustic effects. The 360° projection makes visitors feel as if they have been transported right into Kahlo’s paintings.
The preparations for this digital presentation of Frida Kahlo took two years. The exhibition premiered in Zurich in September 2021 and Brussels is the second stop. It will be the first time that the life and work of the iconic Mexican artist will be presented in an immersive format outside of Mexico. This expo will be presented at the VIAGE – Digital Art Theatre which is the first Belgian venue dedicated to immersive and digital art. Using powerful projectors to project images around visitors, it provides a breathtaking 360° experience. The venue is located in the heart of the city of Brussels and is part of the Grand Casino Brussels VIAGE.
Frida Kahlo, born to a Mexican mother and a German immigrant father, explored her identity and her pain through her art. As a young adult, she spent much of her life confined to a hospital bed. She learned to paint “out of boredom” and in her early years produced many colorful self-portraits. Later, she met Diego Rivera, a man who played a major role in her life, both professionally and personally. A fellow artist and great love of Frida Kahlo, she enjoyed a public and tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera that served as the basis for many of the Mexican artist’s best-known works.
Frida Kahlo is widely considered an icon due to her unique personality, distinctive style, and radical views on femininity and sexuality, which broke many taboos in the 20th century. The artist is considered a leading figure in feminism and is praised worldwide for her surrealist paintings. Her work, rich in symbols, continues to fascinate today.
At the end of this exhibition, the VR experience plunges visitors into the heart of Frida Kahlo’s art. With a VR headset, observers will enjoy an unforgettable journey of several minutes, built around a selection of works by the artist. The exhibition has been created in collaboration with the trust related to Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo museums and presented in collaboration with the Mexican Embassy in Brussels.
The show starts from March 18th 2022 at Viage Digital Art Theatre (Boulevard Anspach 30, Brussels) and the tickets are already on sale now!
