Commerce Design Award Winners 2021

  • Editorial Team
  • October 6, 2021
  • 4 minute read

The Commerce Design Award was created in 1995 thanks to the city of Montreal (Canada). The city saw in this strategic tool a great opportunity to demonstrate for its companies the benefits of design, by experienced professionals. The initiative was quickly followed by other cities around the world in the development of their commercial spaces (Saint-Etienne, Marseille, Lyon, Nantes, Luxembourg, Eindhoven, etc.) including Brussels.

The aim is to highlight the collaboration between retailers and designers in the creation of commercial spaces in Brussels. The winners of the competition serve as an example of innovation for others.

Like last year, Commerce Design Brussels took place in synergy with Brussels Design September. As every year and with an ever-growing curiosity, the Brussels Design September promotes the interaction between roughly a hundred Belgian & international artists and creators with amateurs & connoisseurs in the field of design.

BDS is a fundamentally multifaceted festival that encourages the greater numbers to cross the line and encounter the new facets of today’s design industry by coming in contact with the artists and craftsmen and women in their action (i.e. Arts&Crafts, Jewellery-making, Ceramics, Tapestry Fablabs, Upcycling…etc). Amongst all, the public can choose to see exhibitions, open workshops, happenings, conferences, hands-on workshops and other related events.

Brussels city of design

The idea behind this event is to once again reinforce the image of Brussels as an attractive and dynamic capital, highlighting the innovation of young designers through various events related to Design, in order to enhance the commercial attractiveness of the city.

These past few years, Brussels has incontestably become a city of Design, thanks to the talent and the ingeniousness of our designers.

Design September always wanted to connect with the city and represent
its various exaltations and diversities. The importance and influence of the event are shaped more and more as design in its most various forms takes an increasingly important place in the daily life of Brussels: urban furniture, installations, lights…

This has contributed in a positive way to the city’s reputation and to its
economic and tourist activity. The city of Brussels needs events that put creativity and innovation at the forefront. Design September, alongside the Brussels-Capital Region, the City of Brussels and many institutional and private partners, is proud to contribute to these efforts.

Highlights of Brussels Design September 2021

As the pandemic took central stage during last year, the world has globally suffered the loss of social interaction, this 15th edition of the BDS is a much-appreciated opportunity to experience interaction and exchange. Therefore, by organizing themed visits centred on today’s situation and on the evolution of our global “modus vivendi”, the accent of this year’s edition was on dialogue.

The 2021 BDS’s figurehead was ecology, by offering the possibility to take part in Eco-Design and Industrial Design-oriented activities, and zoomed in on the eco-awareness of vintage and second-hand acquisitions. It also shined a light on Interior Design as co-working and co-living are emerging as a new way of living in today’s world.

The Contemporary Design Market, together with the Brussels Design Market, took place on September 25th and 26th 2021, at the recently renovated harbour station of Tour et Taxis. Fifty Belgian & Belgium-based designers presented their creations. The Brussels Design Market also accentuated the image of Brussels as a vintage city: a vintage route through the city once again marked this edition of the Brussels Design Market, which is now the largest vintage market in Europe.
