Legendary techno club Fuse reopens its doors for a special exhibition

  • Julia Zelle

  • 3 minute read

Are you dreaming of the moment you’ll be able to return to a club? Are you longing to step into those familiar rooms and get lost in the music? If your answer to these questions is “yes”, then your dream just came true! Well, it kind of did. 🙂 After more than a year of closure, Belgium’s longest-running techno club, Fuse, is reopening its doors to host Echoing Through Eternity, a pop-up exhibition about the history of the club and its location.

If you live in Brussels and are even remotely interested in techno music, then this is definitely not the first time you’ve read the name Fuse. But how much do you really know about this iconic techno club? For example, did you know that it used to be a Spanish disco club? Or that it was the mother of one of the founders, Thierry Coppens, who pointed him towards this venue?

  • Disco Rojo entrance, 1970
  • disco rojo line up, 1970

These are only some of the interesting facts you can discover between the 9th and the 18th of April at Echoing Through Eternity. With this exhibition, Fuse will showcase a rich archive containing 27 years of artworks and music trends in the form of posters, flyers and collectibles. A Timeline Wall will help you navigate the history of the club year by year since 1994 and you will also find out about the birth of huge festivals, like City Parade and I Love Techno, a big international electronic event which started as one of Belgium’s first festivals. In addition to that, there are also sections about the history of how the building hosting Fuse went from a movie theatre to the iconic techno club.

But that’s only a small part of this engaging exhibition! Walking through the venue, you’ll see several QR codes waiting to be scanned… Choose one and see what happens! You might catch Peter De Cuypere, one of Fuse’s founders, talk about the first turbulent years of the club or maybe discover more about the long lasting love story between the gay club night La Demence and Fuse by listening to Thierry Coppens.

Finally (saving the best for last), make sure you don’t miss the immersive experience in the Motion Room where you’ll find the “3 minutes of a club experience”. This installation gives you the chance to relive the feeling of being in a club! With loud music and strobing lights, all you have to do is close your eyes and enjoy these 3 minute of bliss. And to take it even further, Fuse decided to open the backstage and DJ booth to the public for the first time ever; besides looking at the Wall of Fame you can also experience what it’s like to be a professional DJ!

I know it’s not like going the club, but it’s definitely intriguing to see this iconic techno music venue from a different perspective. Naturally, all the COVID-19 safety measures will be in place: the route will be unidirectional, masks and social distancing are mandatory and the maximum of people allowed per hour are 60.

Whether you are a clubber, techno music enthusiast or just curious about this venue’s history, make sure to buy your tickets in advance on this website and get ready for a journey into the past, present and future of Fuse!
