Summer sales is always a happy period for shopaholics. Streets with major shops are crowded and good deals can be found in almost any corner. However, we at WeLoveBrussels are always using this period to reflect on the future of shopping and sustainability of the fashion and clothing sector.
Massive production, massive waste, unhealthy chemicals used during creation, bad working conditions for the workers in third countries…all these issues come to mind when the shopping madness starts.
By the way, the summer sales period began last Monday and will last until end of July. In the clothing and footwear sector much consumer activity is expected after a very disappointing spring, reveals a report released by Comeos, the trade and services federation, and SNI, the trade union for the self-employed. Spring sales have declined compared to last year – a reported 3.8% decrease in sales for the January to May period compared to the same period in 2018.
