Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is one of the main Brussels landmarks. Many tourists come to admire its beauty as well as the magnificent interior which includes many artifacts.
We decided to share some of the lovely photos of the Cathedral, posted on Instagram by tourists from all around the world. In order to better understand the urban transformations, we shared also some of the historical photos from the Instagram account Brussels Urbanografix which depicts the Cathedral and its environment in the period from 100 years ago…
People actually used to live next to the cathedral. The cathedral in its original, organic setting, before the whole neighbourhood was massacred by the railway works.
A look on the houses around our lovely cathedral, when they were still housed. Check the Brussels ket in his shorts!
1859! Must be the earliest photograph of Brussels posted on IG. Note the uniform housing giving out on the cathedral plaza and the minor building connected to the cathedral aisle.
