Echoes of Dreams at Maison Hannon

  • Dorka Demeter

  • 1 minute read

Echoes of Dreams is a world-class exhibition currently on display in Maison Hannon until 19 April. The expo presents Belgian Symbolism set in a very unique museum of Brussels. Built in 1902, the house embodies a rare synthesis of naturalism and symbolism. This particular setting restores to the artworks their original function: to interact with everyday life and to mediate between the viewer and an inner world.

In addition, the contributions of leading figures of Belgian and French symbolism are highlighted. Names such as Victor Rousseau, Émile Gallé, Fernand Khnopff, Jean Delville, Jeanne de Tallenay, Charles van der Stappen, George Minne and Jef Lambeaux show how a generation of artists wrestled with tensions, hopes and dreams that are still relevant today.

The catalogue about the exhibition has also been published – a work of art in itself!

In the words of Director and Conservator Grégory Van Aelbrouck – “Symbolist art appears less as an escape than as an attempt to re-enchant the world. By questioning the limits of reality and opening paths toward the unknown, it remains strikingly relevant today. It reminds us that art, far from being a purely aesthetic object, is a space of inquiry, transformation, and dialogue with the world. Was this not also the ambition of Art Nouveau?”
