Photography expo: Robert Doisneau. Instants Donnés

  • 2 minute read

La Boverie in Liège is hosting a major retrospective devoted to Robert Doisneau, one of the greatest masters of 20th-century photography. Nearly 400 images, ranging from his early work in the 1930s to the end of his career, are featured in a rich and sensitive display.

The exhibition brings together his most iconic photographs alongside many previously unpublished works, offering a complete and renewed perspective on his oeuvre. After its great success in Paris, this Liège stop marks the beginning of an international tour and is enhanced by a special Belgian selection.

A humanist eye: Tender and deeply attentive to reality

Far from mere clichés, each of Doisneau’s photographs bears the mark of a curious, tender, free, and generous gaze. He masterfully captures the poetry of everyday life, balancing moments of grace with those of gravity. The exhibition explores the major themes running through his work: childhood, artists’ studios, writers, cafés, his years at Vogue, but also the harshness of the suburbs and the fragility of the human condition.

Discover the work of renowned photographer Robert Doisneau in Liège, in a remarkable exhibition of over 400 photographs!

Through photographs, rare documents, interactive installations, recordings, and audio testimonies, visitors are invited to explore the intimate connection between the artist and the worlds he encountered.

A special focus on Belgium

In Liège, visitors will discover a never-before-seen Belgian selection, highlighting iconic landscapes and figures from the country: from the Cybernetic Tower to the blast furnaces of Liège, from folkloric characters like the Gilles to the timeless charm of Bruges – not to mention his photos of Expo 58 and Georges Simenon.

The collective exhibition in Liège is curated by Tempora and Atelier Doisneau in partnership with the Musée de La Boverie. Get more info & tickets via the exhibition website.
