Musée d’Ixelles to reopen next March after major renovation

Great news for museum aficionados – Musée d’Ixelles will celebrate its long-awaited reopening with a festive weekend open to all, from 19 to 21 March 2027. Following an extensive programme of expansion, renovation, and energy-efficiency upgrades, this milestone marks a moment of reconnection with its audiences, partners, and the artists who have shaped the museum over the years. At the same time, it will open the door to new encounters: with fresh visitors, younger generations, and new dialogues between disciplines, eras, and perspectives.

A New Chapter Rooted in History

This reopening signals a new phase in the museum’s story. To reopen is to reconnect, linking a rich legacy of nearly 135 years of artistic commitment with a dynamic present; bridging a recognised heritage with living practices; and connecting a strong local identity with both national and international outlooks.

Since its founding, the museum has preserved, studied, expanded, and shared a remarkably diverse collection dedicated to Belgian art from the 19th century to today. Comprising nearly 15,000 works, it stands as one of the most significant collections in this field. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, posters, photographs, videos, and installations together form a vivid panorama of artistic creation.

Spanning more than two centuries of aesthetic experimentation, the collection offers a compelling narrative of modernity, with Belgian art as its guiding thread. Today, the museum aims to activate this heritage as a space for dialogue and reinterpretation.

Bridging Heritage and Contemporary Creation

Upcoming exhibitions will highlight this richness through a thoughtful combination of collection displays, thematic exhibitions, and invitations to contemporary artists. The ambition is clear: to deepen the dialogue between heritage and living creation, allowing the collection to resonate with today’s aesthetic and societal questions.

Since its founding, the museum has preserved and shared a remarkably diverse collection dedicated to Belgian art from the 19th century to today, comprising nearly 15,000 works.

At its core, the museum champions a close relationship between artworks, artists, and audiences. This human dimension translates into attentive visitor engagement and tailored mediation for diverse publics. The reopening will also be accompanied by a strengthened commitment to accessibility and to embracing a plurality of perspectives.

With this reopening, the Musée d’Ixelles wants to renew its pact with the public and affirm a clear identity of a public institution proud of its collection, actively engaged in contemporary creation, and attuned to societal challenges. A museum that is human, vibrant, and accessible, where discovering, experiencing, and sharing art becomes a collective journey.

The Musée d’Ixelles is located at 71 rue Jean Van Volsem, 1050 Ixelles / Elsene.
