Spring concert by BachWerk: Dixit Dominus, 28 March

In search of a refined classical concert inspired by the spirit of spring? On 28 March, BachWerk and the Brussels Chamber Ensemble will perform Dixit Dominus by George Friederick Handel, an extraordinary piece of music written in 1707 when he was living in Italy. Also on the programme, the lesser known and wonderful Dixit Dominus by Marianna von Martines, a baroque composer to discover, and Spring from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

By day, a lawyer in the European Commission, by night a superb conductor: Brussels-born conductor Clio Zois will lead BachWerk on Saturday 28 March with the Brussels Chamber Ensemble. Founded in 2013, BachWerk has become a vibrant part of Brussels’ musical life. The choir is made up of around 30 talented amateur musicians performing classical music to the highest of standards.

Anchored around the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, BachWerk performs a diverse repertoire ranging from Baroque masterpieces to Romantic and contemporary works including Bach’s Johannes-Passion and Christmas Oratorio, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Franck’s Les Sept Paroles du Christ, Martín Palmeri’s Misa Tango and Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass.

BachWerk collaborates with different conductors for each programme and had the privilege of working with esteemed conductors including David Navarro Turres, Pascale van Os, Bart Rodyns, Clio Zois and Ivan Johan, each bringing their unique perspective. The choir performs around four concerts each year. In addition to concerts in Belgium, each year the choir goes on a workshop weekend abroad. Past trips have included visits to Berlin, Salzburg and Toulouse.

On the programme for Saturday’s concert: Spring from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Dixit Dominus by Handel, and another Dixit Dominus, by a lesser known classical conductor, Marianna von Martines.
