Studio and gallery Isabelle de Borchgrave Atelier continue their artistic activities in order to perpetuate the artist’s creative spirit. True to her vision, the venue continues to host events dedicated to art, music and dance. In March, the gallery is presenting the work of artist Claudie Laks, chosen for her approach to colour, a central element in Isabelle de Borchgrave’s work. There is a clear resonance between their practices and their way of exploring colour as an artistic language.
Trained at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Claudie Laks has been developing a body of work for several decades in which colour constitutes a true pictorial language. After an initial period devoted to sculpture, her work gradually evolved towards painting, in a quest to liberate colour from any pre-established form. Applied in layers, pure and often unmixed, colour is conceived as a living entity, carrying its own dynamic and truth. Painting, engraving and collage thus feed into a frontal, sensitive and intensely retinal body of work, where gesture and colour engage in a dialogue in a state of constant tension.
