The Fred Sandback exhibition opens this week at the Fondation CAB in the Flagey area. New-York conceptual artist Fred Sandback (1943-2003) created a poetic universe with the simplest, most pared-down devices. At the Fondation CAB exhibition, threads cut the space, structure and define it. Underwhelming at first glance, soon the calm and poetry of the installation enthrals the viewer.
The space of the Fondation CAB works well for this exhibition. It is located in an Art Deco building that has been restored and repurposed by architect Olivier Dwek in 2012.
Walking distance from the Fondation CAB, lies the Flagey building. The Fondation CAB has installed there the tallest Fred Sandback sculpture, in a stunning Art Deco staircase. Indeed the CAB founder, Hubert Bonnet, is also one of the owners of the Flagey « Maison de la Radio » building, a Brussels Art Deco landmark designed by Joseph Diongre in 1933.
Art collector Hubert Bonnet created Fondation CAB 10 years ago to share his passion for minimalism and conceptual art. This summer, the Fondation CAB opened a second space in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
