Migration between regions in Belgium is increasing

In Belgium, residents are moving more and more from one region to another (Flemish Region, Wallonia and Brussels-Capital Region). Thus, in 20 years, the number of migrations between the 3 regions has increased. These migrations are particularly high between Brussels and Flanders: in the course of 2016, 24 000 inhabitants left Brussels to settle in Flanders, which represents an increase of 55% compared to the level in 1997.

This is the main finding of the study on interregional migration, conducted jointly by the three regional statistical and analytical institutes – IBSA, IWEPS and Statistiek Vlaanderen. This demographic study explores the recent trends (1997-2016) of migratory flows between the three regions of the country and illustrates them with numerous maps. It highlights the continuation of the peri-urbanization of Brussels in Flanders and Wallonia, but also reveals new particular migratory logics.
