Brussels region is over 50% green

Did you know that more than 50% of Brussels Region territory consists of green space?

A recent study by Bruxelles Environnement has revealed that 54.4% of Belgium’s capital is made up of green spaces. This also means that Brussels is more “green” in comparison with many other major European cities, such as London (47%) and Berlin (46%).

The collected data takes into account areas such as public parks and public gardens, but also private gardens, green rooftops, stadium lawns, etc

It is worth noting that not all Brussels communes and districts have the equal share of the green spaces.

Some communes/municipalities, such as Watermael-Boitsfort has the largest amount of green space (88%). This is expected since many parks and private gardens are located in the area plus the Soignian forest. In contrast, Saint Gilles is a heavily urbanized commune without extensive presence of green spaces.
