NATO launches first ever graphic novel in the capital city of comic books

A one-of-a-kind graphic novel collaboration between NATO and artists from six nations will be unveiled at a free public event at Usquare in Brussels on Wednesday 7 December 2022.

The graphic novel, created by team of talented young international artists, examines some of the issues we face and explores how we can #ProtectTheFuture.

Each chapter tackles one of the seven themes, which young people have identified as most important to protect their future: climate change; disinformation; women peace and security; the impact of conflict on infrastructure; technology and innovation; international collaboration; and cyber security.

The winning artists include:

·   Rosa Ahlers (Germany) for the chapter on war and its impact on infrastructure;
·   Alexa Toller (Hungary) for the chapter on technology and innovation;
·   Amanda Otomere (Latvia) for the chapter on international collaboration;
·   Miguel de Lys (Spain) for the chapter on disinformation,
·   Fiona Stabler (UK) for the chapter on Women, Peace and Security; and
·   Fiona Thurow (USA) for the chapter on cyber security.

Limited free tickets to experience the launch are available via Eventbrite on a first-come-first served basis here.

Each artist worked closely with other artistic talents including Lia Martin, Charlie Smits, Ervin van Muriel and Parafeno, as well as NATO, to develop the chapter.

Applications were judged by NATO experts, and a panel of graphic artists leading the project. They were selected for their originality, and the way they used their own eye-catching styles to tell a story.

There will be a chance to meet the artists and their mentors Lia Martin and Charlie Smits, as well as an opportunity to meet key people from NATO including its leadership, interns and experts. A Special Guest will also speak at the event, followed by an audience Q&A.

The event is a true celebration of the work of the artists, alongside complimentary food and drink.
