Alice gallery presents “Window” by Jeffrey Cheung

Window is the title of the new exhibition coming to the Alice art gallery on the 4th of March 2021: a solo show by the Oakland-based artist Jeffrey Cheung.

Even though we’re talking about an art exhibition, it is reductive to define Jeffrey simply as an artist. In addition to being a painter, he is a skateboarder, a musician and a social activist. Themes of queer love are prevalent in his paintings, characterized by intertwining bodies of various skin colours and brightly painted backgrounds. The Chinese-American artist’s goal is to celebrate queer identities and sexualities by presenting positive images of queerness. Moreover, Jeffrey refuses to limit the colour palette of the bodies to pink and peach, seen as strictly connected to whiteness. By depicting individuals of different skin tones embracing each other, he celebrates bodies of all kinds and colours.

Jeffrey’s support to queer and trans people of colour is not limited to his paintings: together with his partner, he co-founded Unity, a music group which then turned into a publishing and skateboarding project. Unity’s latest branch, in fact, is Unity skateboarding, developed to create a welcoming space for queer and trans people passionate about skateboarding. On their website you can also find several skateboards decorated with prints by Jeffrey!

If you’re intrigued by Jeffrey’s work, make sure to swing by the Alice art gallery between the 4th of March and the 1st of April. Get ready for a collection of paintings described as an explosion of life, an expression of the artist’s fight for sexual freedom and, above all, an invitation to celebrate love in all its forms and colours.

To know more about the exhibition or to check out some of Jeffrey’s work, you can visit Alice gallery’s website as well as the artist’s Instagram.
