The GRID in the Royal Galleries – artistic game to respect physical distancing

Have you already seen the GRID in the Royal Galleries? “The / Le / De Grid” is the name of the artistic game which you can experience every Wednesday and Saturday this summer. The performance takes place from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the royal galleries of Saint-Hubert and the Îlot Sacré district in Brussels. One of the goals is to revitalize the historic center of the capital but also to remind the visitors to comply with social distancing measures.

The project was designed by artist Jean-Paul Lespagnard, the creator of Extra-Ordinaire boutique in collaboration with the Royal Galleries Saint Hubert, City of Brussels and the department of the economic affairs. A royal troop will thus come to animate these grids drawn in the royal galleries of Saint-Hubert and the neighbouring streets. The troupe from the Théâtre des Quatre-Mains consists of a queen, a king, princes and a butcher. These characters move on a giant red checkerboard, always keeping a distance between them and with passers-by. This initiative aims to get people to pay attention to the enforcement of social distancing rules.

“We are still in the health crisis, but we have to make our urban centers more attractive. We took very strong measures on the rue Neuve, which worked rather well since we have a lot of people even if we do not reach the figures before, but there are still neighbourhoods that are suffering and especially because there are not many tourists. We will have to count on a more local, more Belgian clientele, and make them discover the city center again ”, noted the mayor of the City of Brussels, Philippe Close (PS) during the launch ceremony of the GRID.
