New urban project “Goujons” in Anderlecht

  • Editorial Team
  • December 9, 2020
  • 3 minute read

Permit has been issued for the new urban project “Goujons”, which is located in the CityGate quarter, at the corner of Rue du Prévinaire and Rue des Goujons in Anderlecht. It will accommodate 35 subsidised housing units and a social and health centre of 1,500 m².

The Secretary of State for Urban Planning, Pascal Smet, announced the issuance of the planning permit for the ambitious housing and medical project “Goujons” in Cureghem. The development of a major renovation project like CityGate by citydev.brussels represents a welcome change that will breathe new life into this lively part of the city. Over 130,000 m² of the area will ultimately benefit from a complete makeover. The issuance of the town planning permit for the “Goujons” project, which is part of the CityGate program, is another important step in this revival process.

CityGate and “Goujons” are part of an urban redevelopment master plan for the “Canal-Midi” area. This plan aims to reconstitute a new urban connection close to the dense fabric of the Cureghem district which links the site to the neighboring districts. The objective is in particular to develop new public transport and to build a truly mixed neighbourhood that meets the needs in housing, economic activities and equipment. CityGate thus strengthens social and urban cohesion, the project becomes a “pivotal district” between Cureghem, the Midi station and future projects along the canal.

“The development of the CityGate project as a whole is a good illustration of how we can create new sustainable and lively urban districts tailor-made for the people of Brussels. The construction of this multifunctional building, with its intriguing design, and of the adjoining square is one more step towards our objective: to make Brussels a city offering a real quality of life for all ”, declares Pascal Smet, Brussels Secretary of State for Urbanism.

In line with this master plan, Goujons will provide a solution to the growing demand for housing. The combination of housing and other functions is essential to ensure a varied use of space and to maintain a mixed character. This is why the ground floor will host, in addition to 35 subsidized housing units, an integrated social and health center (CSSI).

“The integrated social health center is the result of a great collaboration between Citydev.brussels, Solidarimmo and Médecins du Monde. As Minister in charge of the FEDER (European Regional Development Fund), I welcome the issuance of the town planning permit for this crucial project for the Brussels Region since Médecins du Monde and Solidarimmo has obtained European subsidies (FEDER) to finance the construction of the front-line support center which will bring together a wide range of medico-social services such as mental health care, family planning, debt mediation, aid for drug addicts, primary health care. The objective of this new center is clearly access to services and care for all. As the project led by Médecins du Monde, it is positioned in the Brussels health ecosystem as an important link in the face of the precariousness of certain populations, by integrating all the operators of the system” said Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort.

The building has an appropriate shape offering an optimal view of the new Place des Goujons. It blends in ideally with its environment and has a strong urban influence. The accommodations follow a north-south or east-west axis and are properly oriented. Access to the apartments is via exterior passageways inside the block, with particular attention paid to the privacy of the accommodation from one another. In addition, the roof is converted into a large collective space that can accommodate greenhouses and vegetable gardens. It will be directly accessible by vertical circulation, thus promoting social relations between residents. The project was designed by the architectural firm BAEB and will be built by the developer Immo Louis De Waele.

“A new step has been taken in this innovative collaboration between citydev.brussels, Médecins du Monde and Solidarimmo. Through this project we are participating in the birth of this new district by taking into account the needs of its future inhabitants. We will co-create a social and health center with partners from Cureghem and Anderlecht. It will offer quality services that are accessible to all ”, declares Pierre Verbeeren, Chairman of Solidarimmo.

Citydev is also working with the Region and the municipality of Anderlecht to create an arrangement that is consistent with the public spaces of the district. The Place des Goujons will thus be fitted out in the same spirit as the public spaces that will be developed as part of the implementation of the Plan PPAS for Biestebroeck.
